It's a chapter that's about to close for Matt Murdock (and for actor Charlie Cox along with him), because after hours of rumours, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline have just confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again will come to an end with its third season, due in 2027 on Disney+. The decision comes just as filming has wrapped and reportedly caught several cast members off guard, with the news delivered to them directly over the phone. And that's not all: both outlets also report that Dario Scardapane, showrunner since the series' creative overhaul, is stepping down too, even though the show is currently deep in post-production and the work isn't finished. Word is that his contract simply expired and wasn't renewed. For now, Marvel hasn't said who will oversee the final stages of putting the episodes together.
Too much change kills the change
This ending caps off a decidedly bumpy ride for Daredevil, knocked about ever since Disney took over and set about reshaping the series in its own image. When Marvel announced the show's return back in 2022, the project was originally meant to run for 18 episodes with Matt Corman and Chris Ord writing. But the 2023 strikes halted production and pushed Marvel into a complete rethink. Corman and Ord left the project, while Dario Scardapane, who had worked on The Punisher, took the reins — or rather the pen. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, best known for their work on Loki and Moon Knight, also joined the creative team. The initial order was ultimately reshuffled into two seasons totalling 17 episodes.
The first season, launched in 2025, actually got off to a particularly strong start with 7.5 million viewers worldwide in just five days. But the second season then saw a significant drop in viewership (particularly in the US), estimated at around 50% according to Luminate figures cited by Deadline.

This third season should therefore serve as the conclusion to Charlie Cox's run as Matt Murdock, following three seasons of Daredevil on Netflix between 2015 and 2018 and then the character's return to the MCU in "Born Again". Season 2 ended on a particularly tense note, with Matt Murdock packed off to prison. No spoiler complaints, please. Either way, Marvel now seems keen to move on, with Daredevil: Born Again joining a list of shows cut off mid-stride — think Moon Knight and Wonder Man, both dropped after a single season. At the same time, Marvel Television is still developing new projects and has just greenlit an espionage thriller provisionally titled Zodiac, a name that may well nod to the criminal organisation well known to Marvel comics readers and led by Scorpio.
As for Daredevil: Born Again, we'll now have to wait until 2027 to see the Hell's Kitchen vigilante's final battle on Disney+.
