The least you can say is that Netflix seems determined to pile up video game adaptations for the small screen. Even though it already has licences such as Tomb Raider (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft), Cyberpunk 2077 (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners), Splinter Cell (Splinter Cell: Deathwatch), League of Legends (Arcane), Devil May Cry, Minecraft, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War and, very recently, Diablo in its locker, the famous platform has announced it has signed a deal with SEGA to produce a live action Crazy Taxi film.
According to the first details to have leaked out, the feature will take the form of a comedy (anything else would have been a surprise) with no shortage of spectacular stunts. While we know nothing about the plot for now, we do know that the writing has been handed to Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, whose credits include The Naked Gun (a reboot of the Naked Gun saga). Producing are Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film (they worked on the first three Sonic films and, naturally, they're involved in the fourth), alongside Toru Nakahara (SEGA). In case you'd forgotten, Crazy Taxi is making its big comeback in 2027 on consoles and PC with Crazy Taxi: World Tour.
Since we've just brought up Sonic, you should know that the Japanese firm and Netflix have also signed up for a new animated series based on the supersonic hedgehog. With Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara at the wheel, this new adaptation will be aimed primarily at a young audience, and will a priori lean towards comedy.
Sky's the limit
Finally – and this is perhaps the most surprising announcement – SEGA and Netflix are planning a live action film dedicated to Stranger Than Heaven. We don't know whether Snoop Dogg has been approached to make an on-screen appearance (he plays a character in the game), but we hope the cast will match the one assembled by the creators of Yakuza (RGG Studios). As a reminder, the story of Stranger Than Heaven spans some fifty years and shows how Makoto Daito, freshly arrived from the United States, earns the respect of the criminal organisations and becomes one of the key figures of the Japanese underworld. We'll take the opportunity to point out that the game is due on 15 January 2027 on Xbox Series, PS5 and PC.
