Everyone, it seems, has something enthusiastic to say about The Batman Part 2, currently shooting between Scotland and the rest of Britain. After Sebastian Stan, who recently described Matt Reeves' film as a particularly ambitious undertaking, it's now Robert Pattinson's turn to pile on. Speaking to our colleagues at Collider while promoting his new film 'Primetime', Robert Pattinson explained that The Batman Part 2 will head in a radically different direction to the first film. « It's extremely ambitious. The first one was already a different approach to a Batman movie, and this one is another different approach. It's a real swerve from the first one, but it still keeps some elements of its atmosphere », the actor told Collider's journalist.
A far more ambitious sequel?
It's obviously hard to know what Matt Reeves is really cooking up, given how tight-lipped the director has been about the plot, but Pattinson's comments at least offer a hint: The Batman Part 2 won't simply be running the first film's formula back. The actor goes further still when he talks about the script, which he describes as remarkably dense. To hear him tell it, Matt Reeves already has an extremely precise vision of his film, right down to the smallest details.
« When you read the script, it's incredibly dense. Matt is one of those directors where you can immediately tell they already have the whole film in their head. There's so much in it that it's almost impossible to take it all in, but as you pick up on certain details you think: "Oh right, he actually knows exactly what he wants to do with that." »
Who are Harvey Dent and Poison Ivy?
These latest comments mostly reinforce what Sebastian Stan, one of the film's new recruits, said recently. The actor (who broke through in the MCU as Bucky) was for a while presented as the new Harvey Dent, particularly after a French interview in which a mention crediting him with the role was published and then pulled. TheWrap later reported, citing internal sources, that Sebastian Stan had never confirmed he was playing the future Two-Face. Another theory is doing the rounds, though: according to insider Jeff Sneider, Sebastian Stan could in fact be playing Victor Zsasz, with Brian Tyree Henry as Harvey Dent. The trail has gone cold and the mystery remains intact.
Scarlett Johansson is surrounded by plenty of speculation too. Confirmed in the cast, she was initially linked to the character of Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent's wife, but that theory has since been called into question. More recently, several rumours have put her in the role of Poison Ivy, in a particularly grounded and dark take on the character, which would fit Matt Reeves' approach rather better. Here again, it's nothing more than rumour for now. And given Robert Pattinson's comments about the script and this famous « new direction », we'll probably have to wait a while yet to understand how all these new characters slot into Gotham.
Either way, to see this « swerve » Matt Reeves has dreamed up, you'll have to hold on until 16 February 2028, the film's release date in France, and two days later in the United States.
