Mads Mikkelsen seems to have developed a taste for video game villains. After playing the unsettling and fascinating Cliff in Death Stranding, the Danish actor is about to go back for seconds in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4. Activision has just revealed his presence in the saga's next instalment through the campaign trailer shown during the Xbox Game Showcase at Tokyo Game Show 2026. And everything suggests that this time he'll be lending his face to Archer, the mysterious antagonist out to get his hands on a weapon capable of upending the world order.
Captain Price on the run, Korea at war
The first thing to know is that the story of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 picks up directly after the events of Modern Warfare 3. Following General Shepherd's assassination, Task Force 141 is disbanded and John Price goes on the run. His former allies are left divided over his methods. Ghost and Gaz are tasked with tracking down their old captain, while a far larger conflict brews on the Korean peninsula. North Korea launches an invasion of South Korea, while Captain Price pursues his own agenda and teams up with some particularly dangerous criminals, among them Valeria Garza, whom we'd already met in Modern Warfare 2. In the middle of all this chaos, Archer is after a mysterious weapon of war whose power could shift the global balance. The campaign will take players to New York, Paris and Mumbai, as well as both Koreas.
Mads, the bad guy
While Activision hasn't yet officially confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen is indeed Archer, the resemblance and the actor's presence in the trailer leave little room for doubt. It would be his second major video game role, after his remarkable turn in Death Stranding. It's becoming a curious speciality for the actor, who has already played a fair few thoroughly disreputable characters on the big screen, notably in Casino Royale, Hannibal and Doctor Strange. Having taken on Sam Porter Bridges, Mikkelsen could soon be giving Captain Price a run for his money.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026, with early access to the campaign from 16 October for players who pre-order the digital Standard or Vault editions. Worth noting, too, that Activision is billing this instalment as the conclusion of the Modern Warfare saga.
