The phenomenon of 2026, Crimson Desert is a game apart and, above all, an open world of incomparable richness. And Pearl Abyss clearly has no intention of letting that open world gather dust, as the studio has just unveiled the game's first proper DLC during the State of Play on 3 September 2026. Called "Charting the Unknown", this expansion doesn't just bolt on a few extra quests and bits of gear — far from it. It widens the scope of the thing considerably, with the arrival of the ocean floor, pirate ships, new bosses, brand-new abilities and plenty more besides, all of which we're obviously about to break down for you...
As a reminder, Crimson Desert launched last March and quickly found its audience, shifting more than 6 million copies since release. Pearl Abyss had already begun fleshing out the game for free with the "Enhanced" update, shown off during Gamescom 2026 a few days ago. That brought several significant improvements, including a full French dub, new narrative scenes, extra cutscenes and various tweaks to the gameplay and skill system. The Korean studio had also warned that a first paid DLC was in the works, though details were thin on the ground at the time. The State of Play, however, laid bare just how ambitious Pearl Abyss is being. First thing to know: the "Crimson Desert Enhanced Charting the Unknown" DLC will be available from 16 October 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Into the depths of Pywel
The other headline addition with "Charting the Unknown" is that Kliff and his companions are leaving the lands of Pywel behind to go and explore the oceans. Players will be able to take the helm of their own vessel (a pirate ship) and set off to discover new islands, with an entire strand of maritime exploration layered onto the game's already vast open world. Nor is the sea purely a means of getting about, as you'll also be able to dive beneath the surface to explore sunken ruins, hunt for treasure and uncover secrets buried in the deep. New enemies and bosses will be along for the ride too, both on land and at sea, which should hand Kliff a few fresh opportunities to put his combat skills to the test — including the fact that he can now run on water, Naruto-style, with chakra under his little boots.

The expansion won't stop at making the map bigger, though: Pearl Abyss also plans to build out the whole management and customisation side of Crimson Desert. Players will be able to run various bits of infrastructure, grow their estate and personalise their living space further. The studio is also promising new ways to strengthen bonds with the people of Pywel, notably through more interactions and conversations. On the narrative front, "Charting the Unknown" will continue the story of Kliff, Oongka and Damiane with new plot threads spun around the events still shaking Pywel. The studio mentions a new threat, political conflicts and a journey that should once again play with the notion of time.
One more element that could be of particular interest to RPG fans: romances might finally be making an appearance. The trailer does seem to hint at the possibility, but Pearl Abyss has yet to officially confirm a genuine romance system. We'll have to wait for the studio's next round of information before we know how far this new social dimension goes. Worth noting that players who pre-order the expansion will also pick up a few cosmetic bonuses, including an explorer's diving set for Kliff and Oongka, plus a light diving set for Damiane. The price of the "Charting the Unknown" DLC hasn't been announced yet, but this first expansion already gives a pretty clear sense of Pearl Abyss's ambitions. Either way, given the content lined up, we'll be diving in with our eyes shut.
