After years of waiting, two trailers, several delays and hype reaching completely deranged levels, Rockstar Games has just unveiled more than 25 minutes of unseen Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay — which we’re obviously going to call GTA 6, it’s more SEO friendly. As you know, the appointment had been set for 9pm on Netflix and, after a few minutes of downtime caused by the flood of connections, the beast was let loose.
Captured directly on PS5, and without even using a PS5 Pro, this long gameplay showcase above all lets us see Vice City as we had never seen it before. Because yes, visually, GTA 6 already looks set to slap everything that currently exists in the open-world field. Jason and Lucia are notably shown during a mission where they have to retrieve a package on behalf of a certain Boobie. Obviously nothing goes to plan, and a police intervention quickly turns the mission into an outright bloodbath. But the most impressive part is everything Rockstar shows around that sequence: switching characters on the fly, twitchy driving, shootouts, car chases, helicopters to dodge, vehicles you can set on fire to make the evidence disappear — the Scottish studio seems to want to push player freedom even further.
A technical monster
And above all, the city of Vice City looks absolutely gigantic, teeming with detail, NPCs, vehicles and activities. We caught sight of basketball, scuba diving, weight training, jet skiing, canoeing, car racing, motocross, skydiving, fishing, heists, nightclubs and even sequences involving influencers livestreaming what they are up to. Rockstar Games also puts enormous emphasis on the relationship between Jason and Lucia. The couple have a genuine duo dynamic, with far more intimate slice-of-life moments than in previous GTAs. You can, for instance, see them holding hands in public (yes, Rockstar went that far in its attention to detail). And the realism doesn’t stop there: the characters’ physiques will be able to change according to their habits, notably diet and exercise. Lack of sleep or certain behaviours will also have visible consequences.
As for Vice City, it of course keeps its famous neon, its beaches, its clubs and its Florida atmosphere, while displaying an absolutely staggering density and level of detail. Even the soundtrack promises heavy hitters, including the return of Phil Collins. So, does this showcase really tell us whether GTA 6 will be the masterpiece we’ve been promised for years? Impossible to say before having the game in hand (even if we rather suspect it will), but one thing is certain: Rockstar has once again reminded us why GTA 6 is probably the most eagerly awaited game of the decade.
