The whole internet had already settled on its ideal candidate to play the hero of PHYSINT, Hideo Kojima's next game. According to the experts, the silhouette in that image simply had to be Robert Pattinson. Wrong. The Japanese creator has now put an end to the rumours: it will be Bill Skarsgård who plays the protagonist of PHYSINT, the actor we've seen as the killer clown in IT, as the Marquis de Gramont in John Wick 4, and in the disastrous remake of The Crow.
It's worth remembering, though, that this announcement lands during a particularly turbulent spell for PHYSINT, which was dropped by Sony PlayStation barely a few days ago. Unveiled in 2024 as Kojima's grand return to action-espionage after Metal Gear, PHYSINT was originally in development with PlayStation's backing. Sony eventually decided to end its collaboration with Kojima Productions, after which the studio turned to Xbox, now the project's partner.
An international cast
So it was at Tokyo Game Show 2026 that Kojima Productions revealed a first poster bringing together Bill Skarsgård and Charlee Fraser, whose casting had already been announced. The studio also revealed the game's tagline: “The Next Cold War Begins”. Hideo Kojima explains that he and Skarsgård have long admired each other's work, and that several tests carried out this year confirmed his choice. Costume fittings, scans and camera tests have already been done with both actors. The casting doesn't stop there, either, as Don Lee and Minami Hamabe are also attached to the project, though their roles remain a mystery for now.
Otherwise, PHYSINT is living up to its reputation as an especially mysterious game. Kojima Productions talks about a new action-espionage title, with heavy use of performance capture and an openly stated desire to blur the line between cinema and video games even further. After Death Stranding, then, Kojima seems keen to push that approach further still, and he presents the game as one of the culminations of his 40-year career in video games. Now we just have to find out what the Japanese creator is really cooking up behind that mysterious poster. PHYSINT still has no official release date.
