We thought CD Projekt RED had closed the book on major Cyberpunk 2077 updates for good, but not a bit of it! Cast your mind back to October 2024, when the Polish studio hinted that the game had reached the end of its big post-launch support. Except that in Night City, good intentions never last very long, and here the game is picking up extra content once more. With Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 landing on Netflix, the developers have got stuck in again with update 2.5, which brings brand-new content as well as features players have been asking for for ages, namely dual-wielding handguns and official mod support. Right, let's run through the lot.

Edgerunners 2 & dual-wielding

Available from 22 October (that's tomorrow) on PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, this new patch will also come to Nintendo Switch 2, though at a later date. CD Projekt RED is obviously taking advantage of Edgerunners 2 arriving on Netflix to tie in with the animated series, and that's the heart of this update. Players will get a new side quest set before the events of Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2, called 'Clampdown', featuring Team King, made up of Meshuga, Miguel and Emily. To keep things consistent with the show's universe, the game's teams worked with the anime's writers, and the voice actors took part in this new mission too. Night City also plays host to another quest, 'Welcome to Paradise', a guided tour of the city narrated by Richard Night. You'll need to hit reputation level 15 to take it, mind. And then there's a new radio station rounding things off, with tracks from both seasons of the animated series.

It's something players have been requesting for a long time, and CD Projekt RED has finally delivered. Update 2.5 lets you wield two handguns at once, via a skill called 'Double Trouble' and several associated perks. A word of warning though, as this is limited to Power-type pistols and revolvers; smart and tech weapons aren't included. We also learn that V's customisation has gained some depth, thanks to five new specialists, the Glamdocs. They let you alter the look of your arm cyberware, such as Mantis Blades, Gorilla Arms or the Monowire. Players can pick their colours using a new customisation wheel. New hairstyles, previously reserved for secondary characters, are also turning up, along with five fresh clothing collections.

Mods officially arrive on consoles

Another big addition: CD Projekt RED is opening the game up further to its community's creations, as mods can be browsed and installed directly from the in-game menus, on PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S alike, courtesy of the mod.io platform. Console players will therefore be able to enjoy certain community creations without having to resort to any outside faffing about. There are a few restrictions to be aware of, however, such as the fact that using mods will disable trophies, with affected saves flagged as such in the menus. The studio does seem to be taking this openness seriously, in any case, as it has also hired several experienced modders to work on the project.

On PC, the update also brings new graphics options, with NVIDIA's DLSS 4.5 arriving, not forgetting AMD's FSR 4, which also makes an appearance. Mac players get MetalFX-related improvements, while CD Projekt RED is announcing further optimisations for ray tracing and the PS5 Pro. On consoles, a field-of-view setting is turning up too, along with a few quality-of-life improvements for better organising saves and filtering items in the stash. All of which should give a new lease of life to Cyberpunk 2077, released in December 2020 and now past 40 million copies sold worldwide. Its 'Phantom Liberty' expansion, meanwhile, has crossed the 15 million mark. Two years after suggesting the game had received its final big update, CD Projekt RED is proving it still has a few ideas up its sleeve.
