Good news for anyone waiting on Metaphor ReFantazio for Nintendo Switch 2: Atlus has just put out a free demo of its RPG, letting you sample the opening hours of the adventure ahead of the full game's release on 12 November. And there's a second piece of good news: if you plan on playing the demo all the way through, there's no need to start over once you've got the full game in your hands, as your progress can be carried over to the final version.
An RPG that left its mark on 2024
The demo covers the start of the story, which is a decent way to get to grips with the game's wonderfully rich systems. There's plenty to get stuck into, too, since this prologue includes the first 4 dungeons and introduces no fewer than 6 allies who can join the hero on his journey. Players can also unlock 7 archetypes — the game's classes — out of the 40-plus on offer in the full adventure. Enough to start getting a feel for what the combat system can do before diving into the rest. Released 2 years ago, in 2024, Metaphor ReFantazio made a strong impression on press and players alike (94% on Metacritic), and even shifted over a million copies on its first day on sale, a record for the studio.
The game was also honoured at The Game Awards 2024, where it picked up the awards for best RPG, best narrative and best art direction. Suffice to say its arrival on Nintendo Switch 2 is a fine excuse to discover it for anyone who missed out first time round.
