GTA 6 sneaks in just before the deadline
Anyone who claimed GTA 6 would land too late to take part in The Game Awards 2026 will have to think again. With a release slated for 19 November, Rockstar Games' next title looked poorly placed to join the running for Game of the Year, given the ceremony is scheduled for early December and voting has to wrap up well beforehand. But a look at the official rules reveals that Grand Theft Auto VI is very much eligible for the 2026 edition. The game makes the cut by the skin of its teeth, though eligibility is no guarantee it will be among the nominees — even if the odds of it missing out are slim.
It was while poring over the FAQ on the official Game Awards site that the world noticed the deadline is now 20 November 2026, that being the cut-off release date for games hoping to land a nomination this year. GTA 6, meanwhile, is pencilled in for 19 November, which means it meets the schedule with a single day to spare. That timing may look remarkably convenient for Rockstar Games, but there's nothing to suggest any special treatment. Last year the deadline was set at 21 November, and previous editions likewise settled on a cut-off somewhere around the third week of November. The rule doesn't appear to have been tweaked specifically for GTA 6, even if fate has been rather kind to the most anticipated game of the year.

Will the jury have time to play GTA 6?
Official eligibility doesn't guarantee a nomination, however. The real sticking point is the selection timetable, since jury members have to vote early enough for the nominees to be announced ahead of the ceremony. With a release set for 19 November, GTA 6 could find itself in a rather peculiar position, arriving barely a few days before the deadline. Everything will hinge on how Rockstar handle access for the press and for voters. If the studio wants GTA 6 among the Game of the Year contenders, jury members will need to play it in adequate conditions before delivering their verdict. For a production on this scale, which should demand at least 80 hours (that's how long it takes to finish the main story) before you can take the full measure of it, that's no small challenge. We'll keep you posted whatever happens.
