Despite the controversies (and the lower-than-expected review scores) that accompanied its launch, Marvel's Wolverine has managed to sink its claws into the American market and win over the mainstream. Insomniac Games' title climbed to the top of the US sales charts for September 2026, according to Circana's figures. Better still, Logan beat out NBA 2K27 and EA Sports FC 27, two major releases that couldn't even steal his thunder. The online rows surrounding Wolverine clearly didn't stop the game from finding its audience — quite the opposite. In fact, look at the detail and you'll see that the figures released by Circana confirm that the launch of Marvel's Wolverine was particularly solid. The title posted the highest first-month revenue for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2, released back in February 2024, which tells you something about its commercial success. That performance helped push revenue from PS5 sales up 43% year on year in September. For Sony, it was even its best month on the console market since May 2025.
Globally, the data previously published by Ampere also places the game among the month's biggest hits. Marvel's Wolverine is thought to have shifted around 2.16 million copies on PS5 in September alone, which earns it second place worldwide, just behind EA Sports FC 27. More broadly, the American chart holds a few surprises too. Eight of the 10 best-selling games in September 2026 were new releases, a sign of a month particularly packed with launches. NBA 2K27, which finishes second behind Wolverine, has also overtaken Resident Evil Requiem to become the best-selling game in the United States so far in 2026.
PS5 climbs, Xbox is in freefall
Marvel's Wolverine's strong results have handed the PS5 a very favourable month. In value, sales of Sony's console were up 43% compared with September 2025, while in units there was a rise of more than 22%. The PS5 is therefore strengthening its position on the American market, with its share of console spending reaching its highest level since May 2025. The picture is inevitably less rosy for its rivals: spending on Xbox Series consoles fell by 2% year on year, but it's the sales volume that really worries, down a full 27%. Xbox console sales in the United States even hit their lowest ever level for a month of September — bearing in mind the previous record low was already September 2025.
The Nintendo Switch 2 hasn't escaped the downturn either, with unit sales down 14% year on year, while spending on the console fell by 12%. All told, console sales in the United States, overall and by volume, were down 3% in September 2026.
